Reflective Media and Policy in Developing Nations
Reflective Media and Policy in Developing Nations
I lead and collaborate on a number of projects that focus on scalable, local means by which communities in the developing world can proactively engage new media technologies to empower different developmental objectives whether they be economic, public-health related, or policy-focused.
The first project, Reflective Media and Digital Visions, has focused on the possibility for local communities to use simple low-cost video cameras (that are dominantly non-literate and fatalistic) to articulate visions for their communities, develop consensus, socially document assets/capacities and undelivered promises, and develop strategic priorities and investments.
The second project, Reconciling the Local and Global: The case of Mismatched Ontologies, is focused on uncovering a means by which top-down organizations and states model information versus the ways local communities engage in the same. How can we start to develop systems that connect information based on the different approaches by which communities express that information? This is critical for e-governance systems, for example, that either provide information to local communities or ask for their input, but present that information around categories and ontologies that differ from the ways these communities understand the same point.
