Designing Technology to Support Non-Western Community Knowledge

How can technologies be re-imagined in line with the cosmologies, values, and ways of knowing of diverse cultures and communities in mind? The Amidolanne project, Zuni for ‘rainbow’, explores the design and power of a digital museum of object of Zuni patrimony to empower Zuni ways of knowing on their own indigenous terms. It examines the potential of sharing knowledge ‘as it stands’, by developing a communication system between the Zuni, archaeologists, and curators where the voices of each are treated as sovereign rather than filtered by existing meta-data and standards. It represents a way forward for cultural institutions to serve and support the communities whose voices and objects they may hold.
