How is social media changing power and impacting revolutions around the world? How does technology impact power and what does it take to engage with technology to add power to various grassroots social movements? I have worked in the midst of revolutions in Kyrgyzstan and now Egypt’s Tahrir Square over the past several years.  I have studied how technologies have shaped mainstream media and journalism, which then impact the demonstrations and protests of those who do not have Internet access, speculating on how regimes such as North Korea may be affected by increased access to social media.

I further study how technologies are impacting communications between activists across the world and nation, and how now technologies are not just within the domain of revolutionaries but also are being used to empower the aims of those in power, from hackers to authoritarian surveillance.
